Islip High School student Rebecca Angelou, who is enrolled in the art, design and visual communications program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, received a gold medal for her first place win in the New York State SkillsUSA advertising design competition, held recently in Syracuse.

The competition consisted of a written exam, assessing general knowledge of advertising design, and a skills performance portion. Participants had to design an existing advertisement and develop a new creative design. To win, Angelou was required to demonstrate her mechanical skills on the computer, understanding of advertising design industry terminology and concepts, and demonstrate a professional presentation and technical execution of the comprehension within a specified amount of time.

Angelou will be attending the SkillsUSA National Skills & Leadership Conference in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of June, competing against students from across the United States.
