About the Office of Health, Physical Education and Athletics
Physical Education and Health
All students are provided with the opportunity to engage in meaningful
learning experiences through quality physical education and health
programs which will develop the skills, knowledge, understanding and
appreciation needed to maintain lifelong healthy behaviors and
attitudes. The diversity and multicultural aspects of our programs will
enable students to become socially and personally responsible citizens
who will contribute to the well- being of their families, school and
community.
Athletics
The student athlete represents the best of his/her school community, and
therefore is held to a high standard. Student athletes are our
school's ambassadors to our community and to the schools with whom we
compete. They are often leaders in school and role models to children
not yet old enough to play sports. Interscholastic athletics helps to
provide insight into many life experiences with regard to
responsibility, fair play, cooperation, concern for others, leadership,
respect, good citizenship, loyalty, tolerance, resiliency,
sportsmanship, confronting fear, adapting, succeeding, and failing.
Interscholastic athletics in the Islip School District is an integral
part of the district's total educational program. The interscholastic
competitive environment provides an opportunity for our participants to
learn positive life skills and values. This is accomplished through the
implementation of the Educational Framework for Interscholastic Athletic
Programs promoted through the New York State Education Department. The
program promotes the four "C's" as stated below:
-
Competence
A student athlete in a quality program is competent in terms of: Skill
Development, Knowledge of the Game/Strategies,
Fitness/Conditioning/Healthy Behaviors
- Character
A student in a quality program demonstrates: Responsibility, Accountability, Dedication, Trustworthiness/fair Play, Self-Control
- Civility
A student athlete in a quality program demonstrates civility towards others, showing: Respect, Caring, Fairness
- Citizenship
A student athlete in a quality program demonstrates citizenship through
actions showing evidence of: Loyalty/Commitment, Teamwork, Role Modeling
The Islip interscholastic athletic program offers a wide variety of
individual and team sports. The experience begins with a modified
four-sport season program, provided for middle school seventh and eighth
grade students, progressing to a three-sport season high school
program, which includes opportunities for participation in junior
varsity programs and culminates with a varsity level experience for the
highest level student-athletes.
Islip School District Interscholastic Sports program including: athletic academic eligibility policy, teams offered, levels of participation, athletic department coaches, general sportsmanship guidelines, FAQ's, sports physical dates, tryout dates, directions to away contests, summer camps and downloadable sports physicals forms. Islip Senior Scores 1,000th Point
The athletic department is pleased to announce that senior student-athlete and varsity point guard Kaeli McAnally reached a milestone in her career by scoring her 1,000th point against Patchogue-Medford during the annual Anil John Basketball Tournament, held at Islip High School on Dec. 3.
The Anil John Basketball Tournament honors three-year varsity basketball player and IHS Class of 2015 graduate Anil John, who lost his life in a tragic accident in 2015. After John’s death, his uniform number 22 was retired from the basketball program, and the team collaborated with the Islip Booster Club to name the annual tournament in his memory.
The district congratulates Kaeli on this outstanding athletic accomplishment and wishes her continued success during the 2021 basketball season.
Student-Athletes Volunteer at The League of Yes Baseball Program
Student-athletes representing Athletes Helping Athletes joined classmate Samantha O’Conell at The League of Yes Baseball Program recently. The League of Yes affords children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball. Samantha volunteers with the group every Saturday.
Dylan Lange, Kaeli McAnally, Jillian Oggeri, Taryn Quinn, Hunter Rindos, Richard Rindos and Noah Whitehouse made the trip to The Yes Baseball Field in Brookhaven where they assisted Samantha in coaching participants in batting, fielding and running. More importantly, the Islip athletes served as buddies to the baseball players.
It was a wonderful experience for the baseball players, their families and the Islip athletes.
