About the Social Studies Department
Students in the Islip School District are taught Social Studies from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our Social Studies instruction is aligned with the New York State Social Studies Framework for grades K-12. The New York State Social Studies curriculum is based on the following five academic standards: the History of the United States and New York, World History, Geography, Economics, and Civics, Citizenship, and Government. There are two Social Studies Regents exams which are required for high school graduation in New York State. The Regents exam in Global History and Geography II is given in grade ten and covers world history beginning in the year 1750. The Regents exam in United States History and Government is given to students at the end of eleventh grade. Students are also required to take Global History and Geography I in grade nine and Economics and Civics in grade twelve in order to graduate high school.
